BOULDER, Colo. — With Kinetics just three weeks away, organizers still are trying to nail down a new home for their second bid to revive Boulder's beloved sculpture race.
Boulder officials shot down organizers' attempt to hold the June 13 event on the Boulder Creek Path, and now the two sides have narrowed options down to two undisclosed city parks.
"In terms of location, we don't know what their exact plan at this point," said Paul Bousquet, spokesman for the city's Parks and Recreation Department. "The bike path is out of consideration. There were a number of concerns based on the size of the craft vehicles and the intended use for the path -- which is a multi-modal transportation corridor.
"It seems incongruous."
Paul Bailey, one of the Kinetics organizers, said his team hopes to be able to announce the event's location by Tuesday.
"We have some alternatives from the bike path that are currently in the proposal stage," Bailey said.
Neither Kinetics organizers nor city officials would divulge which two parks are being considered.
"We'll hopefully have all our ducks in a row, all the hoops jumped through, all the pieces of paper in place so we can announce it Tuesday afternoon," Bailey said.
Kinetics almost collapsed after radio station KBCO (97.3 FM) pulled its nearly three-decade-long sponsorship of the event in 2007, citing decreased attendance and increased cost.
The race -- which featured human-powered crafts of all varieties racing around and through Boulder Reservoir -- long has been one of Boulder's more unique traditions.
Last year, Bailey and some veteran kineticists pulled together a significantly smaller land version of the challenge at Twenty Ninth Street, backed by the Boulder Jaycees.
